Creation of the Department of Ucayali
The Department of Ucayali was officially created on June 18, 1980, through the promulgation of Decree Law 23099. This event marked a significant milestone in addressing the regional demands for autonomy and development, allowing for increased public investment and attention to local needs. The creation of the department was a culmination of years of social movements and advocacy against the centralism of Lima and Iquitos.
La creación del departamento de Ucayali fue resultado de intensas movilizaciones sociales regionales. En 1977 se formó el Comité de Defensa y Lucha de Coronel Portillo (CODEL-COP) que reunía a gremios urbanos, campesinos y comunidades nativas, con fuerte participación de militantes del MIR-EM. Un año después, este Comité originó la formación del Frente de Defensa de la provincia de Coronel Portillo. En 1980, durante el segundo "pucallpazo", el Frente logró exitosamente la creación definitiva del departamento de Ucayali como demanda regional.
