Military court sentenced 6 military personnel for La Cantuta but acquitted high commanders
On February 21, 1994, the War Chamber of the Supreme Council of Military Justice issued a sentence in joined cases 157-93 and 8841-93 against officers and subalterns of the Peruvian Army for the kidnapping, disappearance and execution of the nine students and the teacher from La Cantuta. Major Santiago Martin Rivas and Carlos Pichilingue Guevara were sentenced, as well as non-commissioned officers Juan Suppo Sanchez, Julio Chuqui Aguirre, Jesus Antonio Sosa Davila and Nelson Carbajal Garcia. General Juan Rivero Lazo and Colonel Federico Navarro Pérez were convicted only of negligence. The sentence presented the detachment as an autonomous group that acted without superior orders.
