Slaughter in eight communities in the Tsiriari valley

On August 18, 1993, three columns of the PCP-SL simultaneously attacked eight communities (six colonists and two Asháninka) in the Tsiriari valley, Mazamari district, killing 65 people with bladed weapons. The massacre was denounced by the Peruvian government to the UN on September 20, 1993.

On August 18, 1993, three Shining Path columns, each composed of approximately 70 settlers and natives, entered eight communities in the Tsiriari valley (six colonists and two Asháninka). The massacre began around 4:00 p.m. in the Nomatsiguenga Tahuantinsuyo community, where twenty-one people were killed, including children, men and women. The murders were committed with bladed weapons: arrows, machetes and others were hanged with sticks. On Thursday, August 19, the villagers who came down from the mountain gave notice to the Army from the Mazamari base, and on Friday, August 20, they finished burying the dead. Several media outlets spread the news as the 'Asháninka massacre' with a total of 65 Asháninka dead, although the massacre occurred on Wednesday, August 18.
