In February 1993, the commanders of the 'Wacapu' and 'Vista Alegre' base committees in Otica, named Maximo and Javier, coordinated the escape of both groups from Shining Path control. The escape took place on a Sunday morning at 3 o'clock in the morning. During the escape, Javier found his brother already dead on the beach, and most testimonies indicate that Javier had to kill his own brother in order to escape, highlighting the extreme sacrifice involved in this escape. This event occurred in the context of the increase of Asháninkas attempting to flee the Popular Committees of PCP-SL between 1992 and 1993, due to the conditions of forced labor, rigorous rules and loss of individual freedom.
