Clandestine detention and torture of María Magdalena Monteza Benavides
On October 30, 1992, María Magdalena Monteza Benavides, a 19-year-old student, was arbitrarily detained by military personnel in Lima and subjected to torture and rape during her interrogation. As a result of the rape, she became pregnant and was forced to incriminate herself under threat.
María Magdalena Monteza Benavides, a 19-year-old sociology student, was arbitrarily detained on October 30, 1992 at noon by members of the Intelligence Department of the 1st Division of the Army Special Forces, led by Lieutenant Colonel Julio Rodríguez Córdova (who identified himself as César Infantas Cortijo). The arrest was carried out without a warrant or communication to the Public Prosecutor's Office. That same day, in the afternoon, she was interrogated blindfolded, and when she refused to acknowledge the charges, she was beaten and raped by her captors. On November 3, 1992, she was handed over to DINCOTE, where she incriminated herself under threat of reprisals against her family if she denounced the torture and rape. As a result of the rape, she became pregnant.
