On July 18, 1992, students from the Enrique Guzmán y Valle National University of Education, known as La Cantuta, disappeared. This event occurred in a context of intensifying political violence in the country, a few months after the self-coup of April 5, 1992. The disappearance occurred during the period of the VI Military Plan of the PCP-SL and in the midst of a series of violent actions that included the Tarata bombing in Miraflores two days earlier. The La Cantuta case became one of the most emblematic of human rights violations during the Peruvian internal armed conflict.
