On July 1, 1992, the Shining Path raided the town of Huamanquiquia, in the province of Victor Fajardo. This event occurred in the context of the end of the internal armed conflict, when the PCP-SL was already militarily defeated after the capture of Abimael Guzman. Despite this, the 'Feliciano' faction (SL Rojo) continued operations in some areas, trying to rebuild the support bases of the Cangallo-Fajardo Zonal Committee. The raid is part of the latest episodes of violence in Zone I of the south central region of Ayacucho.
