Ambush in Challhuamayo
PCP-SL ambush in Challhuamayo where a municipal vehicle was dynamited, resulting in the death of 17 people, including the provincial mayor, civilian authorities and military personnel. It was one of the last major attacks in the area.
On June 19, 1992, in Challhuamayo, a vehicle belonging to the Huancasancos Municipality was dynamited by the Shining Path PCP. Seventeen people perished in the attack, including civilian and military authorities. Among the victims were the provincial mayor, the sub-prefect, the provincial prosecutor, the justice of the peace, the manager of the micro-region, the driver, a captain of the Peruvian Army and ten soldiers providing security to the authorities. This was one of the last significant violent events in the area before the capture of Abimael Guzman.
