On May 14, 1992, the Shining Path PCP carried out coordinated assaults on three annexes in the district of Ulcumayo, in the province and department of Junin. This action was part of a broader campaign known as the 'caravan of death' that the PCP-SL executed in the area during 1992 to secure a strategic mobilization corridor from Carhuamayo and Ulcumayo towards Pasco. The attacks took place in the context of the subversive strategy of eliminating authorities and inhabitants opposed to their cause, seeking to maintain control of strategic spaces. These assaults occurred a few months after other similar attacks in February of the same year in the area of Tama, where the PCP-SL had assassinated villagers for promoting peasant patrols.
