On May 13, 1992, in the context of a campaign of violence by the Shining Path PCP in the districts of Paucartambo, Huachón and Ulcumayo, the accidental mayor of the small town of Chupaca was murdered by slitting his throat. Despite having previously announced by radio his resignation to avoid being assassinated, the PCP-SL executed him along with two other community members.
