On February 2, 1992, a PCP-SL contingent of approximately fifty men entered the Chinchiaco and Marcapata ranches in the town of Tama, Ulcumayo district, in Junín. This attack was part of a wider campaign by the PCP-SL in 1992 to secure a strategic corridor in the area, carrying out a "caravan of death" assassinating authorities and villagers opposed to their cause. On the same Sunday, February 2, in Huallamayo, Juan Cordova and three of his sons were assassinated for promoting the organization of a peasant patrol. This action took place in the Tambillo district, part of a corridor used by PCP-SL militants to move from Carhuamayo and Ulcumayo to Pasco.
