Installation of military base in Cutivireni
In 1991, the Peruvian Army installed a military base in Cutivireni and an Asháninka Self-Defense Committee was formed after 169 Asháninka were evacuated by air due to constant PCP-SL attacks.
In September 1991, a group of 169 Asháninkas from Cutivireni were transferred by air to the Urubamba valley with the support of the Franciscan priest Mariano Gagnon, after suffering multiple attacks by the PCP-SL. In 1991, the Peruvian Army installed a military base in Cutivireni. Along with the installation of the base, a Ronda or Asháninka Self-Defense Committee was formed in the community. The Cutivireni community had shown increased resistance to the advance of PCP-SL since 1988, suffering repeated attacks, including one on November 14, 1989 where six people were killed.
