Murder of journalist Gustavo Zúñiga

On August 30, 1991, journalist and Cambio 90 leader Gustavo Zuñiga was shot and killed by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Juliaca, Puno. This crime was part of a wave of selective assassinations against authorities and political leaders that the PCP-SL carried out in Puno during 1991.

On August 30, 1991, journalist and Cambio 90 leader Gustavo Zuñiga was shot and killed by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the city of Juliaca. This assassination took place in the context of an upsurge of subversive violence in Puno during 1991, especially of urban annihilation commandos. The crime was part of a series of selective assassinations against authorities, political leaders and public figures that took place in the department of Puno during that year. Days before, other leaders had been murdered, such as Porfirio Suni (May 14) and the mayor of San Antonio de Putina (July 17), and days after Zúñiga's murder, the head of the National Institute of Civil Defense in Juliaca was also executed (August 18).
