The country's military chiefs met with representatives of human rights organizations. The objective of the meeting was to deploy joint efforts to prevent the situation of violence from worsening in the country. This meeting took place in a tense context, after a 104-day teachers' strike that ended on August 23. The meeting also took place at a time when the U.S. government had suspended military aid at the request of Senator Edward Kennedy, who demanded the temporary suspension of military aid appropriations due to allegations of human rights violations attributed to Peruvian military personnel.
