On May 22, 1991, the PCP-SL assassinated four people in Huasahuasi, Tarma province. The victims were the nun Irene Mc Cornack, the community president Pedro Pando, the former mayor Alfredo Morales and the leader Agustín Vento. This attack was part of the Shining Path's strategy to eliminate local authorities and people considered enemies of their cause. The assassination of the foreign nun and three local community leaders was evidence of the intensification of PCP-SL violence in the Tarma area during 1991.
