Ashaninka Army disbands

On March 18, 1990, the "Ashaninka Army" disbanded after fulfilling its mission, months after the assassination of the ANAP leader by the MRTA. This native self-defense organization had emerged to confront subversive actions in the Pichis River region.

On March 18, 1990, the "Ashaninka Army" disbanded, stating that it had completed its mission. This dissolution occurred months after the December 1989 assassination of Alejandro Calderón, president of ANAP (Apatyawaka Nampitsi Asháninka), an organization representing 52 native communities of the Pichis River and its tributaries. The MRTA had withdrawn from the area without confronting the natives after this assassination, settling in the districts of Perené and Pichanaki, in Chanchamayo. The dissolution of the Ashaninka Army marks the end of this native self-defense organization that had emerged in response to MRTA actions in the region.
