Asháninka Army concludes its work
The 'Asháninka army' concluded its work in March 1990 after expelling the MRTA from its territory in Oxapampa. This indigenous military organization had been formed in response to the assassination of three Asháninka leaders, including their leader Alejandro Calderón, in late 1989.
In March 1990, the 'Asháninka army' ended its work by expelling the MRTA from its territory in Oxapampa province. This army had been formed in response to the assassination of three Asháninka leaders at the end of 1989 by MRTA, among them Alejandro Calderón, pinkátzari (great chief) and president of ANAP. The Asháninka of the Pichis and tributaries reacted quickly to these murders, organizing militarily to defend their territory. The expulsion of the MRTA was facilitated when in December the Peruvian Army took the El Chaparral camp, the most important MRTA base in the area, dispersing its members in different places.
