On January 29, 1990, a large contingent of Asháninka entered Ciudad Constitución, armed with bows, arrows and shotguns, in search of presumed MRTA members. This entry was part of a larger Asháninka uprising that had begun in the first days of January 1990, when an undetermined number of Asháninka (which according to the CVR report could have reached 2,500 natives) took the town of Puerto Bermúdez. The advance of the Asháninka army was halted, in part, by the protest and mobilization of the coffee guilds of the district of Pichanaki, on the right bank of the Perené River. This uprising followed the assassination of an Asháninka leader by the MRTA and a confrontation between the MRTA and the Army that occurred within days of each other in December 1989.
