Strikes in state and private sectors
During 1990, state and private workers in Peru carried out multiple strikes and work stoppages in sectors such as health, justice, transportation, mining and potable water. The government responded by denying wage increases until 1991.
Government workers went on strike in several sectors including Social Security, the Judicial Branch, the Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of Transportation. In the private sector, miners carried out staggered strikes. The workers of the country's potable water services and the public workers grouped in the CITE also went on indefinite strikes. Despite the widespread protests, Minister Juan Carlos Hurtado Miller stated that there would be no wage increases until 1991.
