A woman was arrested in the district of San Juan de Miraflores on November 3, 1989. During her detention she was the victim of rape by State agents. Later, when she tried to report the rape to the medical examiner, he told her that since time had passed and she was not a virgin, the rape could not be proven. The medical examiner only recorded the visible bruises on her body (legs, arms, back and pubis), but refused to document the rape. This case exemplifies the impunity and lack of institutional support faced by victims of sexual violence during the internal armed conflict.
