On July 8, 1989, Shining Path dynamited an electrical substation in La Oroya. This attack was part of a series of terrorist actions against the infrastructure of the mining company Centromín Perú in the area. The dynamiting attacks continued throughout 1989, seriously affecting mining operations and the sector's economy. Days later, on July 13, hikers dynamited Centromín Perú's compressor house, ventilation pipes and power plant in Morococha.
