Establishment of the Department of Social Service (Paz y Esperanza) by CONEP
In August 1984, the National Evangelical Council of Peru (CONEP) established a Department of Social Service called Paz y Esperanza. This initiative aimed to support evangelicals affected by violence in Peru. The department's creation marked a significant response from the evangelical community to the political violence, highlighting both the solidarity and the divisions within the church regarding their role in social issues.
El CONEP estableció en agosto de 1984 un Departamento de Servicio Social denominado Paz y Esperanza con el propósito específico de atender a miembros evangélicos afectados por la violencia. Esta iniciativa surgió como respuesta a la represión y el sufrimiento de comunidades de fe en zonas rurales y urbanas. Aunque algunas iglesias apoyaron tímidamente esta labor humanitaria, otras demostraron indiferencia e incluso se opusieron al trabajo que realizaba el CONEP.
