Murder of Barbara D'Achille and Esteban Bohorquez

Barbara D'Achille, journalist and environmentalist, and Esteban Bohorquez, CORDE-Huancavelica official, were assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso on May 31, 1989 in Tinyacclla, Huancavelica, as part of the Shining Path offensive of that period.

On May 31, 1989, 'El Comercio' journalist and environmentalist Barbara D'Achille, along with CORDE-Huancavelica official Esteban Bohorquez, were assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Tinyacclla, Huancavelica. This double assassination was part of the PCP-SL's 'hit list' during the 1989-1990 Shining Path offensive, a period in which the subversive group claimed to be close to a 'strategic balance' of forces with the State. The murders occurred in the context of increased violence in the province of Huancavelica, where 96 violent deaths were recorded in 1989.
