Peru's Withdrawal from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
In 1999, the Peruvian government decided to withdraw from the contentious jurisdiction of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. This decision was criticized by various figures, including Mons. Bambarén, who expressed concern over the lack of legal recourse for Peruvians whose rights might be violated. The withdrawal was seen as a step back in the protection of human rights in Peru.
Tras el retiro del Perú de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, el presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal Peruana, Mons. Bambarén, expresó que la población fue desinformada respecto a los motivos de esta decisión. Señaló que el gobierno redujo la justificación únicamente al tema del terrorismo, sin considerar que también estaban implicados todos los peruanos. Bambarén destacó la importancia de la Corte Interamericana como la única instancia en la cual los peruanos podían denunciar violaciones de derechos humanos.
