Internal Conflict in Ayacucho
In 1988, Ayacucho was heavily affected by the internal conflict between the Peruvian government forces and the insurgent group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path). The period was marked by significant human rights violations, including killings, disappearances, and abuses by both sides. The military and police were criticized for their excessive actions, while Sendero Luminoso was blamed for the majority of the violations.
