In February 1989, a large group of subversives from the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the village of Canayre in Llochegua. According to testimonies, the subversives came down the river from Ene. During the attack on the village, they killed 37 people. This attack took place in the context of the violence in the jungle of Ayacucho, in the Apurimac River Valley, where the PCP-SL was exerting pressure to enroll the population and confront the siege of the Self-Defense Committees.
