• June 30, 1984

  Murder of Feliciano Barreto in Aranguay

  At the end of June 1984, Shining Path members led by Leoncio raided Aranguay and publicly assassinated Feliciano Barreto, the community's first president. This selective assassination was part of the PCP-SL's strategy to eliminate local authorities and community leaders who represented obstacles to their territorial control.

• July 7, 1984

  Murder of René Oré in Aranguay

  A week after the murder of Feliciano Barreto, on approximately July 7, 1984, the Shining Path guerrillas assassinated René Oré, a leader committed to the people of Aranguay. This selective crime against a woman leader demonstrates that the PCP-SL also targeted women who exercised community leadership and opposed their actions.
