Shining Path at Universities: Concept and Practice of Folklore — 'New Type Art' in the Sikuris

Reflections are offered on the conception and practice of "Sendero Luminoso" regarding folklore, including sikuri ensembles. From the Marxist-Leninist-Maoist-Pensamiento Gonzalo worldview that claimed to be the ideology of the self-styled PCP-SL, the concept of folklore was understood as not only irrelevant for describing traditional arts but also as an "imperialist" concept. Nevertheless, folkloric music and dance was not foreign to Senderista activities; they also "practiced" folklore, even forming an organization, El MAP (Movimiento de Artistas Populares), which was a "self-generated body" devoted to the practice and "use" of folklore and "new-type art" — an eccentric proposal that we will examine further in its relationship with sikuris.
