Wooden Dead and Ink Like Blood: The Construction of the Peruvian Nation-State from the Reports of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a Monument of Memory

The Peruvian armed conflict (1980-2000) was clarified through the Truth, and later the Reconciliation, Commission (CVR), established in 2001 by the transitional government headed by Valentín Paniagua. The CVR published a Final Report in 2003 as the result of an exhaustive investigation, which covers the events, the victims, the context of violence, the perpetrators and responsibilities, as well as recommendations and victim reparation programs, and national reconciliation. It is worth asking whether this Report and the related events (such as the Public Hearings) organized by the CVR for its presentation constitute a national monument in Peru's recent history, or in what way it is an element in the constitution and vindication of the ethnic identities of the victimized.
