"Mamá Angélica" Has Spent Nearly Three Decades Searching for Truth and Justice

Angélica Mendoza de Ascarza has become the public face of the families of the disappeared in Peru. She has never tired of crying out for them. Doña Angélica is an example of resistance in the face of arrogance. As such she has been recognized by the Defensoría. Until July 2, 1983, Angélica Mendoza de Ascarza was a mother devoted to caring for her eight children. That unforgettable night her life changed forever, when soldiers from the Los Cabitos barracks in Ayacucho entered her home and took away her son Arquímedes.
