Hurtado, "The Butcher of the Andes"

In this 1985 photograph, Peruvian Army second lieutenant Telmo Ricardo Hurtado Hurtado is covering his vacant gaze with enormous dark aviator glasses. Above his lips, a bushy mustache spreads like an umbrella on both sides of his cheeks, and his smartly pressed parade uniform shirt is impeccably ironed and displays stripes and decorations. The photograph lives in the memory of the bereaved families of Accomarca who, this week, were able to look him in the eye and demand that he pay for his actions and reveal who ordered him to commit such cruelty. Military intelligence had identified those Peruvians as terrorist criminals. Hurtado received an order and carried it out.
