Accomarca, Hurtado and La Cantuta
The chargé d'affaires received reports that Captain Telmo Hurtado is not under detention, despite a six-year prison sentence resulting from the Accomarca case. The chargé said that the case affects the credibility of the Peruvian government in investigating and punishing responsible parties in human rights cases, and that this raises deep concern in the U.S. government. "By coincidence"... the informant was in the waiting room of the office when the chargé arrived. This general called La Cantuta a serious crime and insisted that the military tribunal would treat it with the seriousness it deserves.
