GENDER AND THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION (CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION)

This report originated from the workshop held on March 19, 1996 at the University of the Witwatersrand. The workshop, titled "Gender and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission," was convened by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies to further develop a process of opinion on the gender issues facing the Commission. A group of psychologists, lawyers, members of non-governmental organizations, members of the Gauteng legislature, and interested individuals — including representatives from each of the four regions of the TRC — were present. Participants felt that the issues raised at the workshop should be presented to the TRC in a formal report. We hope this report will assist the Commission in fulfilling its important role.
