The Invisible Trials
It is striking how little we know about the actual state of the judicial process in Peru. Even more striking is how little interest the topic generates. It is worth asking why this is the case, when in other societies such as Argentina the trials against the repressors, as they are called, are very visible; every day there are reports about specific sessions of ongoing judicial proceedings and the revelations that emerge from them. Last week, for example, it was reported that a former military officer testified, for the first time, about the training that members of the Argentine Armed Forces received from the United States in torture methods, and how the Argentines ended up teaching new methods to their mentors.
