Government Yields and Law Allowing Impunity Is Repealed
Faced with harsh and widespread criticism that crossed borders, Peru's parliament, at the initiative of the government itself, repealed the legislative decree that enabled the statute of limitations and dismissal of cases involving crimes against humanity. Amid the scandal, half of the ministerial cabinet resigned. The Congress's decision was preceded on Tuesday by the amendment of Legislative Decree 1097, with adjustments that made its application more flexible, and then by the successive removal of nine of the 18 ministers in the government of Alan García.
