Cantoral Benavides Case: Survival in the Search for Justice

The Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, in its ruling issued on August 18, 2000, in the case of Luis Alberto Cantoral Benavides against Peru, declared as proven facts that he was detained on February 6, 1993 and released on June 25, 1997, having been imprisoned for four years, four months and nineteen days. He was pardoned on June 24, 1997 by Supreme Resolution No. 078-97-JUS. Cantoral Benavides left Peru out of fear and insecurity. Since June 1998 he has lived in Brazil. During his imprisonment he was tortured. In this article, the protagonist recounts his life and his search for justice.
