During the last two decades of the twentieth century, Peru faced a profound crisis, aggravated by the spread of political violence. This violence was both a consequence of the crisis and a fundamental component of it. The decisive role in its genesis and development was played by a small political organization that emerged in the Andes, to which initially very few people paid attention.
