Learning from Shining Path: Civil Society Theory and Fundamentalism

As an anti-State in a civil war situation, Sendero functions to retranslate the discourses of civil society, or rather to reprocess them to reveal their constitution. Metropolitan discourses were also transformed by Sendero's refusal to accede to their paradigms of social theory: Sendero provides the limit of civil society theory, the inexplicable distortion on its horizon. Sendero thus functions as a brick wall, a screen, an empty signifier onto which other social agents can project their images of fanaticism as a negative reflection of the Senderista emanations of a rational purity.
