Sterile Beliefs: Sterilization and Contraception in Peru (Translation)

Translation of the article "Barren Beliefs: The Sterilization Campaign and Contraception in Peru," which is also in our press archive. This article examines the socio-cultural ramifications of a government-ordered sterilization campaign that took place in Peru during the 1990s. It subsequently describes the contraceptive decision-making of inhabitants of the department of Cusco, Peru, which was one of the focal points of the sterilization campaign. The author argues that the organization of contraceptive decision-making, for both men and women, is hindered by structural, economic, and socio-cultural factors.
