Confessions Before the Tribunal of History
The Peruvian military has no interest in the judgment of history because they have everything to lose in it. The conventional wisdom about the war they waged with Sendero is highly favorable to them, so they lose with any revision. Moreover, in the real world, beyond the metaphors, no military officer has been convicted after a fair trial before a legally established tribunal, and it would be absurd for them to have the slightest interest in ending such a profitable situation of impunity. Given all this, why go to trial, whether before civilian courts or before the court of future generations?
