THE FURY OF SATOMI AND THE BEGINNING OF THE DECLINE OF FUJIMORISMO

Despite the magnitude of those "crimes against humanity" and the well-deserved 25-year prison sentence against the defendant mentioned above, the sanction for "immaterial damages and compensatory payments" to the families of those murdered and the indemnities to the aggrieved parties—amounting to a derisory total of 90,000 dollars—falls far short. Is human life and dignity so cheaply valued economically in Third World countries? Because in other countries, life insurance policies would pay at a minimum around five thousand euros just for funeral expenses, which is nothing compared to the cases of La Cantuta, Barrios Altos, and individual kidnappings. This is the weak point in the compensations. Reparations should be a sum exceeding five hundred thousand dollars. That is the source of the "fury" and "shock" of Ms. Satomi Kataoka, administrator of a Japanese hotel—described by the Peruvian press as a "businesswoman"—and wife of the convicted defendant, who upon learning of the sentence against her husband, whom she has not seen since 2007, said among other things: "It is a total shock for me; I am seething with fury."
