Néstor Cerpa Cartolini, the leader of the 17 MRTA members entrenched in the Japanese ambassador's residence, is experiencing a prominence that was almost always out of reach in his eventful political life. His name was certainly associated with the violent takeover of the Cromotex factory in 1979, but afterward, within the leadership of the Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru, it was Víctor Polay, Peter Cárdenas, Antonio Gálvez Olaechea, Hugo Avellaneda, and Lucero Cumpa who made more noise and gained greater standing.
