Shadows of Freedom. Joy of the First Released, Overshadowed by the Government's Attempt to Extend the Faceless Courts

Just days after the first 31 prisoners unjustly accused of terrorism were released, the Congressional Justice Committee approved a bill extending for another year the validity of the faceless judges system, which is considered responsible for a large share of the errors that sent hundreds of innocents to prison. Liduvina Ccasqui Ccente, 65 years old, upon leaving Chorrillos prison, could not believe she was free. "Thank you, dear God," she kept repeating, as she embraced Father Hubert Lanssiers and the other two members of the Pardons Commission, Jorge Santistevan and Carlos Hermoza Moya. She had been sentenced by a faceless tribunal to fifteen years in prison. Published October 10, 1996.
