The Impact of Truth Commissions in Latin America

The process of coming to terms with the past, in societies where totalitarian regimes were established, begins in some cases with the work of Truth Commissions, tasked with investigating human rights violations and violations of humanitarian law in the recent period. Coming to terms with the past requires the national society to critically confront the grave acts of violence in a given period, in order to seek ways to repair the harm caused and endeavor to prevent its recurrence in the future. That is why the common cry in countries where systematic and massive violations of human rights have occurred is: Never Again! Published in October 2001.
