Although a series of monographs have the dubious merit of having recently found their way to publication and significant gaps in our knowledge still exist, in the sixteen years that have elapsed since the Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso (PCP-SL) launched its armed struggle on May 17, 1980, with the symbolic burning of ballot boxes in the Ayacucho locality of Chuschi, the quality of publications on the insurgency has still not improved.
