Benedicto's Path

Following the publication of his book (966 pages, two volumes), the former head of the Grupo Especial de Inteligencia (GEIN) recounts to CARETAS events such as the night Abimael Guzmán escaped from an already-detected safe house and was dropped off at Campo de Marte, just a few meters from the Ministry of Aviation, where a vehicle manned by a Shining Path unit would pick him up. The head of the legendary group that captured Guzmán on September 12, 1992 was reassigned almost immediately after that feat, and after occupying several unimportant posts was sent as police attaché to Panama — a gilded exile — where he remained for four years. Published June 30, 2000.
