Chungui, traces of memory. Report

Chungui is a community belonging to the province of La Mar, in the Andean region of Ayacucho, in southern Peru. According to the Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación, it was one of the communities most severely affected by terrorism. "Chungui - Trazos de memoria" is a report broadcast on the program Presencia Cultural (TVPerú - Canal 7) showing how Edilberto Jiménez, an anthropologist, craftsman, and retablo artist, has attempted to recover the memory of survivors of the violence imposed over twenty years by both terrorist groups and state security forces. A task that, the artist reveals, has not been easy. To channel the pain of those affected, Jiménez turns to drawings because sometimes words cannot capture the immensity and cruelty of certain events.
