Writings, Images and Scenarios in the Face of Repression

This volume, and the series of which it forms part, are the result of a program developed by the Latin America Regional Panel of the Social Science Research Council, with the purpose of promoting research and the training of young researchers on the memories of political repression in the Southern Cone. The program was designed to address three different, though interrelated, questions. The first is the need to generate theoretical and research advances that contribute to enriching debates on the nature of memories in the region, on their role in the constitution of collective identities, on the consequences of memory struggles for social and political practices in transitional societies. The second question is to promote the development of a new generation of researchers with solid theoretical and methodological training, prepared to articulate novel perspectives on social processes of memory, but also prepared to address the wide variety of pressing topics that will arise in the Southern Cone in the future. Finally, the program aimed at creating a network of public intellectuals in the region concerned with the study of social memory and related topics. (Excerpt from the foreword).
