Report to Congress on the Events in the Prisons

Regarding the content of this publication, we also find it necessary to provide a brief explanation. Before the public opinion that followed the Commission's work very closely — treated as front-page news at various moments — the Report was predominantly given a simple name: "Informe de la Comisión Ames." It is a Congressional text that therefore observes all the formalities appropriate to its nature. This is how it is published. No attempt has been made here to produce an abridged version, "translated" into a more journalistic language, or one that would incorporate the more personal or sweeping opinions of its authors. All those legitimate and useful alternatives, which have already begun to emerge, do not eliminate the need for the parliamentary document itself to be within reach of the public and specialists, in conditions suitable for its best study.
