A Place Called Dog's Ear

In "Un lugar llamado Oreja de Perro," the story is told of a reporter who is assigned to travel, along with his photographer, to the breathless heights of a depressed town in Peru to cover a presidential visit within the framework of a "social program" and a Truth Commission on the systematic violation of Human Rights that took place from the 1980s onward. An obsession presides over the book and the protagonist's mind: the evil and cruelty of which human beings are capable, but also a desire, a motto, a rebellion — the refusal to accept that horror and pain should settle among us as familiar data or mild, tolerable habits.
